Crytek has announced their next-gen game development engine - CryENGINE 3 - for major gaming platforms. Crytek will be showcasing the CryENGINE 3 at the Game Developer Conference (GDC) 2009 starting March 23 at San Francisco.
Crytek boasts the CryENGINE 3 to be the first development platform for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, DX9/DX10, and massive multiplayer online games, with scalable graphics and computing for all 'major upcoming platforms.'
CryENGINE 3 includes CryENGINE 3 Sandbox level editor, which is a professional tool designed by and for game developers. So basically, Crytek is moving from PC-only development to multi-platform.
A lot of gamers know that the graphics potential of CryENGINE 2 hasn't been exploited fully. Now, this announcement about CryENGINE 3 will puzzle or even enrage the 'enthusiast PC gamers' since the game engine will also cater to the console gaming crowd.
Will Crytek have two different engines for PC and console game development? There isn't any mention about DirectX 11, which might be expected to go mainstream by 2012, hopefully. We'll have to wait to see what Crytek has to show at the GDC 2009.
