Those friends of yours, who were still getting used to the older Facebook, now have a new UI to cope up with - and if you're in India, there's still some time.
Remember the new features that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced last week? They've started rolling-out the new home page since yesterday. Till this morning, it wasn't available to any of our friends registered in India. Any of you see it already?
Here's what the New Facebook offers:
Live Streaming: This is the highlight of the whole change. Live streaming offers Twitter-like real-time updates from your friends and groups that you're a part of. Users can control who they want to receive updates from.
The Publisher: Facebook claims to have introduced an improved Publisher that sits on the top of the home page. It claims to let you easily add your own status, links, photos, thoughts and more into the stream. Whatever content that you add on Facebook will be going into the stream.
Privacy: Facebook offers 'filters' dedicated to let you control who receives your updates, while lets you choose who you want to receive real-time updates from.
Highlights: This is another biggie for the new homepage. The 'Highlights' section on the right side of the homepage allows. It shows you what's happening over a longer period of time-as opposed to the stream, which shows you what's happening right now.
Sounds interesting to you? The changes with Facebook haven't gone down well with some of the members. In a group called Petition against the "New Facebook", they've lamented about why they want the old Facebook back.
A bunch of 'hate-groups' were formed for the cosmetic changes Facebook incorporated less than a year ago (some of these still exist) but fizzled out with time.
With regards to the changes on Facebook -- What are you thinking of?
Personally, I HATE the new look of facebook. It is, excuse my french but a clusterflip of chaos and unwanted scrolling down the page to get to the information you're looking for.
First, I despise the new "HIghlights" on the right. There are a handful of unwanted friends whose "highlights" I don't care to see, but don't want to delete them as friends.
Second, there is no way to "collapse" any of the feeds or shrink any of the updates, so if you click on "photos", you see a large sized picture of the latest friend to add photos. There is no option to collapse it into "one line" like the old facebook.
Plus, all the text is the same size and boldness, so it is difficult to distinguish whether or not something is a status update, new photo story, link, etc.
In addition, the "what's on your mind" doesn't show what your most recent "status" is, so if you don't remember you have to scroll all through the clusterflip of chaos on your page to figure out what you wrote last. Really annoying.
AND... I FINALLY convinced my mother and some other family members to join, taught them how to navigate the pages, why it's useful and fun to keep in touch with people, etc. and NOW it's so confusing, will have to explain why things like why you can't get rid of the "highlights" and why there are so many ads on the right side of the page.
I'm incredibly disappointed at the roll out of the new facebook and am also disappointed in all of the "testing" and "observing of users" and "eye tracking" to find that what they rolled out is nothing but a clusterflip of a chaotic mess.
I like clean, simple, non-busy. This is the complete opposite of what I once liked about facebook and hope they'll at the very least give users the option of removing "highlights" or at least customizing them and allow the "collapsing" of feeds to one line updates as they did before.
Oh and also add your most recent status to "what's on your mind" so we don't have to scroll down to figure out what we wrote last.
Thanks.
I used to find lots of old friends from seeing that someone was "now frends with" so and so...it was also fun to see when friends were tagged in a photo, or made a comment on something- this is what made facebook interactive and allowed so much connection. now it's a static stream of boring. Why would they take away the very connectivity that made it popular in the first place?
Amen to that entire comment. My thoughts exactly. They've taken away what I enjoyed so much about browsing over to my home page throughout the day and now filled it with junk that I really don't need to know or see. At least I'm wasting less time at work!
Facebook has gone through the 2nd overhall in a year purely to compete w/Twitter. A-duh-uh... as if we all didn't know that! I live in the US & got on Facebook while in college b/c of friends, but I've been meaning to get off for a while now - it's just sooo addictive. I didn't like where it was going - and could see all these problems coming a mile away: All the "older" people joining (like my mom) and the growth of the site meant a more diverse community - I have to be honest, I would've been happy if that didn't happen. That the site was mainly for students was a big part of the lure for me. After last year's change it hurt my eyes. This year's change is ridiculous - I have no time to reset those preferences. I'm sick of it & I'm getting off. And yes, it does look now like it was designed by a novice.
I think the changes are great. What most people want to see is the stream of status updates and photos. Facebook now makes it really easy to create different groups of friends so you can see what they're up to without scrolling through all sorts of stuff.
For example, just create a group of friends called Top Friends or something like that and move it to the top and you will see all of the important status updates and photos that the people you care about most have posted. You can quickly see everything without missing things. Create another group for work. Create another group for casual friends that you can check once in a while when you have time.
The information is much easier to process and should foster better communication.
However, It would be nice to have a little bit more control over what's there because some people want to know when friends are making other friends and what groups people are joining. I bet that will come with time.
Matt
Why on earth to they keep on changing facebook?! i mean, its absolutely fine as it is. We don't need any changes! i HATE the new facebook. I agree that it is so confusing and just not the same. I used to love facebook. But now i hate it. Is there anyway that we can get the old facebook back?
One solution is startup a competing social-network site which is a workalike for the old facebook format, and get people to register. Be warned though: it's a lot of work...
If I wanted Twitter, I'd use Twitter. This is another example of bad focus in web design - FB is trying to compete with Twitter even though the two services don't compete.
WOW, why the change? FB...your losing fans because of this change. Not one of my 300+ friends seems to like it. Now I have to explain to my dad, mom and many others whom are not to computer fluent about this change. Do it like myspace did it, have the option if you want the new layout or stay with the old one!!!!!
I think with some time and getting used to the new layout could work very well. However, there are still issues which need to be sorted, but I guess these can be corrected over time and as people give feedback to Facebook.
Overall I have to say... it SUCKS. Not only does it make me have to click mutiple links to see the same information I saw before, but it has lost functionality. For example there is no longer a way to delete notices from your profile page.
This new facebook sucks, where has live feed gone? now when a friend comments on a pic of another friend, it doesn't show up, if a friend becomes friends with someone it doesn' show up, & the column for status update & photo is now just one, what does status update have to do with new photos added? plz bring the old facebook back or else I'll lose interest & stop using it that much.
Ok seriously people, like always, they are trying to make things better and new to stay on top. If they don't make changes then other sites can easily take over as the new and "hot" site for social networking. Also I've been around on facebook for a long time, we've gone through so many changes and in a few weeks or a month for some I suppose, we will like the new changes just the same. So give it a chance, and by chance I mean a few weeks and if you don't like it then after using it, complain if you'd like. But I bet the majority of people will learn to like it just as well, and love new features.
Changing just to stay "hot" is a stupid idea. Changes should be made to bring new functionality of fix things that are broken. Now I have a highlights page that can not be customized in any way. How are the developers supposed to know what I want in my highlights. I really don't freakin' care that some friend of a friend of mine doesn't like that he has been tagged as the lazy goof in that stupid picture that everyone things is funny. Yet it has been in my highlights for the last 4 hours.
Tell me how that is a good change? I am betting that you can't.
No, give me back the control of my homepage or give me back the old facebook
They took my fun. This new thing sucks. You have NO control over the highlights, I don't even know what they are, don't want to see them. And, if you just want to minimize a story or a person's post, you can't, it is either there or you delete them from showing up at all. That is ridiculous. Sure there is nothing to compare "facebook" to, but they seemed to have taken away basic controls that worked. Just because i don't want to see one picture a friend puts up, does not mean I don't want to see anything they do etc etc etc. hate it!
