Id Software's highly anticipated game Rage under the Electronic Arts banner has been delayed.  The first person action shooter game is now expected next year.

id Software chief Todd Hollenshead made the revelation in an interview (video) with GameTrailers.com at DICE. Rage is built on id Software's next generation Tech 5 engine.

Last year, at QuakeCon 2008, John Carmack commented about the storage problem in Microsoft's XBOX 360 console, which was the main reason for the game's delay then. He stated that Microsoft needed to reduce royalties on the third DVD since compressing Rage's textures could lead to quality loss if packed in two DVDs.

Hollenshead stated that Rage is a post-apocalyptic first person shooter with vehicular combat as seen in Burnout Paradise game. Apart from 'traditional id-style first person shooter' action instances, the game incorporates large outdoor environments, open structure.

"It's not quite open-world, but the environments are vast compared to Doom 3," Hollenshead said.

Rage from id Software will be published by Electronic Arts for PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Mac platforms.
