Looks like the wheels of the 3G roll-out in India are finally moving, as promised.

Today, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is launching its 3rd Generation, or 3G, mobile services in Agra, Dehradun, Jammu, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Lucknow, Shimla, Patna, Ranchi, Haldia, and Durgapur.

Earlier this month, the state-owned telecom service provider rolled out its 3G services in Chennai.

With this launch, subscribers of 3G services in the mentioned places will be able to enjoy mobile data transfer speeds of 2 mbps from the present 144 kbps, video screening of calls, video on demand, mobile surveillance, live TV, movie downloads, and more as and when BSNL supports it.

If you're lucky enough to live in the cities that now have 3G connectivity but still don't know what you can do with the technology, fret not -- click here for" a crash course on what you can do with 3G. For the nitty-gritty, visit BSNL's FAQ page. For information on tariff of the services offered, click here.

BSNL has also tied up with Nokia, Sony and Samsung for handset bundling, the cheapest of which is priced at Rs.7,000. Last year, there was also news floating around that BSNL was contemplating tying up with Apple to make the iPhone 3G worthy of its capabilities in India -- seems like that deal hasn't come through yet.

Anyway, if you're impressed and want a 3G connection right away, fill up this 3G user registration form and get started.

While Delhi, Chennai, and now all these places are 3G equipped (with others soon to follow), thanks to MTNL and BSNL -- we're still awaiting news on when will this so called next generation mobile telephony will grace Mumbai, and other major cities.

while bsnl is providing 2.4MBps via EVDO wireless for 550 per month, wats this much to talk abt 384KBps via 3G-UMTS for 3000 per month. I am talking about unlimited plans. And I don't expect much from BSNL, as their service is very bad in 2.5G service as well. Lets wait for Airtel or Reliance to launch it. For BSNL we need to go to bsnl office for every thing. For others they will do it on a call

Got it in my city. But, only limited to the parent telecom circle. No roaming with 3g as of now!

Mumbai will demand a flurry of 3G connection users. May be they do not have enough capabiliity to augment capacity there, whereas smaller towns can be a good starting ground. Still it is not a good practice to single out a smaller city & put the topic of the article in such a way.
