Rumors about Microsoft launching its own range of Smartphones were dashed after Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer on Tuesday said Microsoft had no intentions to venture into the highly competitive mobile phone hardware segment.

Just prior to the Mobile World Congress, rumors were afloat that Microsoft may launch its own range of smartphones.

Ballmer added that Microsoft, as of now, only intends to focus on selling software that is compatible with a host of devices. Microsoft's decision is interesting as Apple has managed to create a considerable dent in the Windows Mobile market share over the past months. However, Ballmer countered saying that the gains were "not as dramatic as some people might think."

The saving grace for Microsoft is that it is about to release the latest update to the current edition of Windows Mobile, the much expected Windows Mobile 6.5. Soon after, we will also see Windows Mobile 7 making its first appearance.

Microsoft is seeking to make money by offering Windows mobile on cheaper devices and intends to work on redesigning its user interface, introduce an application store and offer a content backup services as add-on features.
