    Canon SX110 IS [Review]

Sudeep Naik, Feb 20, 2009 1659 hrs IST

A 9 MP camera with 10x optical zoom lens, Will the Canon SX110 IS better its older sibling?

Compact, 10x zoom lens, optical image stabilization, PASM modes, good sharpness, well-implemented face detection, good battery life.

Expensive, too large for a pocket, LCD display washing out in bright light, long flash cycles

Features

The sensor on this model is 9.0MP (effective). There is a 10x Canon zoom lens with a focal length of 36 - 360 mm as well as a 2.2x Digital Zoom (as compared to the 4x in the SX100 IS) feature. As the name suggests, it has an Optical Image Stabilizer; this is a Lens Shift stabilizer system that provides up to three stops of camera shake correction. This is bound to be useful when the 10x zoom is using being used, because the effect of camera shake is directly proportional to the lens magnification.

The camera features a 3-inch, 230,000 pixel resolution LCD, an ISO range of 80 to 3200, live histogram in record mode and the usual PASM (Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Full Manual) modes.
The only differences between the SX100 IS and the SX110 IS are that the latter comes with upgrades like a higher resolution screen and a 9 MP sensor.

The 3-inch LCD occupies most of the space on the SX110's rear panel, and is used as the viewfinder as well as the image viewer.
Given the zoom capability of the lens, Canon chose to include a true optical image stabilization system on the SX110 IS. You can have the system function only when the shutter is tripped or to be on all the time; the former actually helps improve battery life. Also, the camera has a panning mode, which makes the stabilization function even more useful for sports photography.

The DIGIC III imaging processor figures on this model. It allows for an ISO sensitivity range of 80 to 1600, multiple face detection, red-eye correction and relatively low power consumption. Multiple face detection intelligently detects and prioritizes faces in a scene to give you a stunning picture of the subjects with great sharpness and the right exposure. Face Detection AE (Auto Exposure) cleverly adjusts to the ideal exposure setting for that perfectly-lit face. It captures your main subject in the most flattering light regardless of your subject's clothing or environment.

The SX110 has new Face Select and Track feature that lets you select and focus on your choice of subject from up to 35 faces detected in the frame. The camera also incorporates improved red-eye correction while reviewing pictures, which uses face detection technology to identify and digitally remove red-eye from images.

Coming to the shooting modes, you get about 18 of them, ranging from the point-and-shoot Auto mode to the PASM modes. There are special scene modes like Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Indoor, Night Scene and Aquarium. There's no dedicated Sports mode though.

You can shoot movies at resolutions of 640 x 480 (30 fps / 30 fps LP) at 320 x 240 (30 fps) or at 160 x 120 (15 fps) with a zoom function. They are stored as AVIs with mono sound.
For connectivity, there's a USB 2.0 port to connect the camera to your PC or Mac to transfer pictures.

I am an an amateur photographer, and wanted to buy a good digi-cam with manual mode since quite some time now. I originally had a pentax P1. Since this purchase, i am extremely glad about the investment i made! The images on lower ISOs comes a little grainy but can be manupalated with the Manual over-ride. Just Amazing!

The ISO tests you guys do is so unprofessional, you guys shoot pics of different ISOs in the same lighting condition, every lighting is different, diff ISOs are meant to be used in different lighting conditions, apart from the fact that there is noise in higher ISOs , the ISO test does not prove anything else

The ISO tests here are an indication of how well Noise can be suppressed by the camera.
