Skype, the eBay owned VoIP software company, has struck an ambitious deal with Nokia. As part of the deal, Nokia announced at the Mobile World Congress that it will sell their upcoming mobile phones with Skype pre-installed in it.

Nokia's N-series phones will now have Skype pre-installed; with Nokia N97 being the first phone to come out in June this year with Skype pre-installed.

This is an interesting development, since mobile phone users are always looking for free and low-cost calls. Along with that, Skype's embedded module will allow users to chat through its client. Embedded first in N97's address book, users will get to see their online Skype contacts. Skype to Skype VoIP calls are free.

Also, SkypeOut service will be available at low rates (might vary from operator to operator) to make calls from Skype to mobile devices and landline phones.

Apart from Nokia, Sony Ericsson's Xperia X1 will also get Skype panel soon. Apple's iPhone already has a VoIP application called Truphone. This application is also available for Nokia E-series and N-series mobile handsets.

However, Indian users might not be able to make the best of Skype-installed Nokia handsets as the international calling rates haven't reduced. And with Skype's low-cost alternative, it's unlikely that Indian cellular operators will support such application, which eventually will affect their income from international calls.

Hmmm... Here's what you could do now - Your phone doesn't have to be a Nokia N97 but any S60 / PPC with Wifi - Use Fring to make skype (internet) calls to your Skype Calls for free to your skype contacts - I've been doing it for over a year now with my N95-8GB
