After Steve Ballmer spilled the beans about Windows Mobile 6.5 last November, purported screenshots of the new Windows Mobile 6.5 interface leaked out. At the ongoing GSMA Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona, Microsoft officially revealed the features of Windows Mobile 6.5 and its user interface.

Microsoft has pepped up the new Windows Mobile 6.5 with a honeycomb-style main menu interface for touch-friendly usage. The company claims that the honeycomb style main menu is much easier to use than the traditional grid layout menu. Note that the Windows Mobile 6.5 interface will support resistive touchscreens only.

Along with the honeycomb design, new gesture functions with a set of associated animation features have been added for users to tap, tap and hold, pan, and flip between icons for easy navigation. Not surprisingly, the development team has changed the Home icon to a new one since the old one looked a lot like Mac OS X's Home icon.

The new lock screen has more intuitive and actionable access options for different notifications. So, from the locked screen mode, users can directly select 'read new email received, new text message, or chat.'

For a better web browsing experience, Windows Mobile 6.5 has a revamped Internet Explorer that supports new Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 (optional component) and a touch-friendly zoom slider with a bunch of frequently used command buttons. The address bar in IE for Mobile now has address auto-complete suggestions, and it allows search from the address bar. The new IE browser for Windows Mobile 6.5 will compete with iPhone's Safari and Android's browser on the grounds of 'desktop-like' web rendering.

Major highlight of the Windows Mobile 6.5 update is Microsoft's MyPhone service that allows sync and back up of phone content to the service website, protected by a password. The MyPhone web portal is currently in invite-only beta mode.

It looks like there is a paradigm shift in the Windows Mobile 6.5 with its fresh interface looking different from the previous versions. With the interface facelift, the anticipation about new functions and features in the Window Mobile 7 are bound to rise. Windows Mobile 7 is expected to demo in 2010, some time in April.
