The strength of the foundation is now more than that of the Open Handset Alliance platform
Yesterday, as many as 14 new members joined the Symbian Foundation, taking the total number of members in the alliance to 78.
The latest entrants into the Symbian fold includes biggies like HP, MySpace, Qualcomm, SanDisk and Bank of America. The new members have been announced just before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicks off at Barcelona, Spain. With the addition of these members, the strength of the foundation is more than that of the Open Handset Alliance platform, more famous for its Android Operating System.
The comparison with Android is natural because of Symbian's upcoming Open Source (OS). The OS will rival Android, which also happens to share the Open Source pedigree. The new OS will also have the likes of the iPhone, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry in sight.
It is interesting to note that some of the members happen to ally with both the foundations. The best example is Qualcomm and GPS vendor SiRF Technologies, which have made their presence felt in both the groups.
