Apple's Snow Leopard To Have Location, Multi-Touch

Borrows features and tools from iPhone

Apple's next operating system Mac OS X 10.6 will reportedly borrow features and tools from iPhone. Two major functions of iPhone OS - Multi touch and Geo-location will be implemented in the Snow Leopard.

As per AppleInsider's reports, a pre-release build of Snow Leopard OS includes CoreLocation framework which comes directly from the iPhone OS SDK. Current latitude and longitude of the Macs running Snow Leopard would be identified through the CoreLocation framework. Wondering how? Mac's networking hardware will be converged with Internet to broadcast/share existing location of the Mac since no GPS chips are embedded on Mac machines.

The Silicon Alley Insider points that Apple already uses Skyhook Wireless in the iPhone and iPod Touch which uses database on Wi-Fi hot spots for identifying user location based on GPS platform.

The patent winning multi-touch feature of iPhone and iPod Touch would be incorporated in MacBooks, MacBook Pros and MacBook Air on Snow Leopard. Developers currently writing applications for Snow Leopard will be able to incorporate multi touch in their programs through Cocoa-based programming interfaces. And after winning multi-touch patent for iPhone recently, it's likely that Apple will exploit the same on their Mac machines.

Not to forget, both Mac OS X and iPhone OS are based on same foundations of codes and libraries. Hence, incorporating multi-touch and geo-location features in Snow Leopard may be less bothersome.

Coincidentally, this new follows after Google recently rolled out Google Latitude feature in Maps for Computers and Mobiles.

The features of Snow Leopard have raised expectations and we can hope to catch a glimpse of it at the World Wide Developers Conference in June this year.

Apple have stated numerous times that they will not make 'pad' or touch screen computers as the technology is useless whilst mouses and keyboards are more accurate and don't drain the power. I would be pretty angry if they did though cause i just bought a new macbok and I hate not being up to date.

Thanks for pointing out the error. At times packaging too much information and discarding some of it at the last moment leaves some scrap in the product.
