As a mobile phone user, you are likely to receive less spam on your handheld device starting this month.

This will be possible as Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a notification which says that it will now be able to track down mobile phone spammers.

If you are registered with the National Do Not Call (NDNC) Registry - a government service, which when registered with, is supposed to bar any unsolicited commercial communication to be delivered to a subscriber through the mobile phone - and are still receiving unwanted calls and/or messages, you can lodge a complaint with TRAI so they can nab mobile phone spammers.

What happens is -- there are bulk message systems registered with TRAI to send commercial text messages (mostly advertisements) to individuals. The authority then has no control over the content of the bulk messages being sent by the application-to-peer (A2P) message centers.

Now, TRAI has passed a rule that all telecom operators will need to prefix an identification tag before dispatching any A2P SMSes from their message centers. The identification tag will leave a trail, thus enabling the telecom authorities to locate the sender of the spam messages and take suitable action against them.

So, if you've registered yourself with the NDNC service and are still receiving unsolicited commercial communication, complain!
