There are times when you need to get off your computer you know Breathe some fresh air, get in touch with reality, and get in touch with what the rest of the world is up to. Watch some movies! Here's a list of Techtree approved geek movies that will make your weekend fascinating. Rent these movies if you can, buy the DVD, or download it if you have the bandwidth, but just watch them.

Now, we aren't about to recommend Titanic and Hitchcock to you, this is not about avant garde fagitude. This list is a compilation of movies that no computer geek should miss. These movies have a strong technology/science fiction angle to it, and was culture bearing movies for techie geeks during their time.

To a cynic, a movie is a kind of vacuous escapism from reality. A suspension of belief and consciousness, as you subscribe to the directorial vision of someone else, reality is captured in its stark nakedness, and prettied up to be as presentable as possible. Once in a while, you have movies that are so unique in their appeal that they become a mission statement and the voice of a generation. Cult movies that speak directly to a small minority, represent their hopes and fantasies, and give them a voice and a vision when they need one.

Enough soppiness for a paragraph, here's a run down of techie movies that you should watch.

The Matrix (1999)
Unless you've been in a coma for the last decade, you should have a fair idea about why this movie is one of the best techie movies of all time. The Matrix pulls in all sorts of references and influences from mythology, religion, and philosophy.

What is the Matrix? Two kinds of people had no trouble understanding that. Gamers and Philosophers. The story revolves around a computer hacker Thomas Anderson, alias Neo, who is contacted by an enigmatic Morpheus, who makes him realize that the reality he lives in might be a computer simulation. In the near future, computers create a simulated 20th-century life called the "Matrix" to draw power them.

Some of my personal faves - Cube Cube 2 - Hypercube Dune [Unfortunately I liked the TV mini series better than the movie] Predator Event Horizon The Prestige League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 2001: A Space Odyssey Supernova Well, I can't claim that all of these fall in this category, but I personally found them quite geeky mainly for the plot/story.

Ghost in the shell is an excellent movie constantly aimed at trying to see what makes a human. The basic theme if a machine can think and fell like human, then will it have a ghost (spirit), then how can you distinguish between a human and a machine. So what perfectly defines a human.
