Sony Computer Entertainment Europe denies widely circulated rumors that a PSP 2 with a touchscreen is being developed
While the web was abuzz with rumors about a PlayStation Portable successor to arrive this year, Sony quietly denied it. Last month, rumors about Sony's plans to bring out a PSP-4000 console in 2009, as per internal sources, spread over the Internet.
Anticipation about the introduction of a better PlayStation Portable is bound to rise with the recent updates for a slimmer-lighter body (PSP Lite) and a brighter screen (PSP-Brite). Gaming industry news major IGN reported that several 'credible sources' have stated that a PSP 2 version is in the works and will have multi-touch technology.
"According to our sources, the PSP 2 will feature a widescreen multi-touch interface comparable to that of the iPhone for both in-game control and menu navigation." Apple's iPhone OS platform is already being looked upon as the next handheld gaming phenomenon.
After the appearance of the new Nintendo DS with a 3.5 touchscreen, the anticipation about the arrival of a touchscreen PSP is obvious. The Homebrew Community have their version of the PSP with a touchscreen in the works.
Even if Sony considers a PSP 2 with a touchscreen, the prices will be high since a good quality resistive touchscreen with an accelerometer will add to the cost. Also, game developers will have to write touchscreen-specific games and will have to make use of the accelerometer. However, if the console included such features, then it would become a drool-worthy and must-have purchase.
Sadly for us, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe denied all rumours about a PlayStation Portable with a touchscreen in the works; hence, it seems that there are no current plans in the offing for a PSP 2 introduction soon.
psp 2 would be great when is comes out. including if it has a litte blue ray disc games made for it. two joysticks includes with psp. that would be awesome. mini harddisk. would be cool tough.
It should at least have an accelerometer and not touch screen control. touch screen does not make good gaming controls. I have the touch and some games like monkey ball are good but the few exceptions to the touch screen controls are supper collapse and any single touch games.
It is way to awkward to hold (like the PSP is now) it needs a handle design like a PS controller.
