The annual international science and technology festival of IIT Bombay -- Techfest 2009 -- a three-day long event kick started today and saw a mix of some exciting stuff.
Eliminations were held for Robowars - the inter college combat robotics competition. For those who missed the eliminations can check out the finals of this competition January 26.
Other major highlight was Energize where participants had to build machines capable of running solely on renewable sources of energy, or producing electric power using the same.
IIT Bombay also played host to a host of distinguished lecturers from the world of science and technology. Ravi Venkatesan, chairman, Microsoft India, made a return to his alma mater to talk about Microsoft. Other speakers included Dr. Henry Markam, director of the Blue Brain project which seeks to rebuild the structure of the human brain, and Dr. Martin Hendry, astrophysicist at University of Glasgow, Scotland, who talked about "the fabric of space-time" and gravitational wave astronomy.
Also gracing Techfest later in the evening Dr. Dario Floreano, director of Laboratory of Intelligent Systems at EPFL, Switzerland, gave a talk on evolutionary robotics.
This year's workshops included the SFX or special effects workshop, which tutored students from all over the nation on how special effects are added in movies. The Bio informatics workshop, a physical computing workshop and a simple plastic airplane design workshop.
Techfest also took a peek into the future with the Haptics workshop. Haptics is a field of technology that deals with touching and manipulating imaginary computer generated imagery.
Informal events with open participation included Junkyard Wars, Survivor, and the Puzzle Hut, The Gaming Zone brought together gamers from all around to compete in popular games like Age of Empires, Counter Strike and Fifa 2008.
Exhibits put up by DRDO and Nissan also got a good response from the crowd. The aircraft exhibition followed the evolution of aircrafts through the ages.
The major attractions at Techfest include a demo of Windows 7 on Microsoft Surface and a Reactable -- a collaborative electronic music instrument with a tabletop tangible multi-touch interface.
The MS Surface Demos at the Exhibition area were cool... There was also a Windows 7 Beta multi-touch PC over there. And I got keys to download software.
