Troubled times continue for Motorola. According to recent reports, Motorola has lost its position as the third largest manufacturer of mobile phones in terms of the number of units shipped.

The latest figures put Motorola behind Nokia, Samsung, and LG. Sony Ericsson follows at number five. While LG has barely managed to pip the once world number two, what is worrying is the free fall that Motorola has been experiencing in terms of its position among handset manufacturers. Nokia continues to lead the pack with sales of 470 million units, followed by Samsung with 200 million. LG and Motorola managed 100 and 99.9 million, respectively. Sony Ericsson was not far behind with 96.6 million shipments.

Motorola, which has been constantly in the news for all the wrong reasons, has experienced a turbulent 2008. Apart from the economic slowdown that affected most companies worldwide, Motorola's own product portfolio was not met with a great deal of enthusiasm, resulting in a major restructuring process that included significant loss of jobs.

We can only hope that products get a major rehash this year and the company gets back the coveted position it enjoyed not long ago.
