Sony PlayStation 3 firmware update features the Photo Gallery app, DivX 3.11 support, and media enhancement functions
Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, has put up a post about the arrival of firmware v2.60 for PlayStation 3. A novel feature included is a new Photo Gallery application along with Guest Access to PlayStation Store and DivX 3.11 support.
The new 140MB 2.60 update features the Photo Gallery application that needs to be installed from XMB under the Photo section. The Photo Gallery app has tools for organizing and displaying the digital photo collection. Slideshows with music and playlists can be created with the stored digital photos.
This update will also add DivX 3.11 support for videos on PS3. Also, non-PSN users would now be able to access the PlayStation Store for checking out new games, videos, demos, etc.
Do people wonder why Xbox is mopping the floor with the PS3? Who in the world wants dumb updates. They take hours to install and add nothing to your system. NOTHING!! The PS3 is a GAME MACHINE, it is for PLAYING GAMES!!!! Sony needs to stop wasting everybody's time with lame photo gallery and DIV crud updates.
What Sony fails to understand is that game players want to turn on their system and play games. Sony is apparently confused and thinks constant updates are some sort of entertainment. Xbox updates take all of a few seconds. When someone asks me what system to buy, I naturally tell them Xbox unless they want to waste their life away updating their PS3. not only that, Sony FORCES you to install their dumb updates before you can play any games on-line. Sony had better get it together before they lose their butts on the PS3. LittleBigPlanet , Valkyria Chronicles and Warhawk may not be enough to save them.
erichwauconda is an idiot. Listen, numbskull... the reason why there are updates is because they're necessary... otherwise, you'd still be playing xbox and not xbox 360... The thing you don't seem to understand is that the PS3 is not just a gaming machine. It's a PLAY - "STATION"... You can play video games, music, videos and suf the net. And please, don't speak for me when you say that "game players want to turn on their system and play games". I enjoy using my PS3 like an Ipod. I enjoy watching bluray movies, surging the net, etc, etc... So please, go play with your xbox 360 that doesn't do ish for you... we don't want you buying or playing any ps3 games, so get off the sack of LBP, Valkyria Chronicles and Warhawk.
Sounds good to me! Still waiting for the golden update to enable me to play my PS2 games but hey! its progression
Another step to improving this fabulous machine ^^
Hmm makes me wish these updates werent mandatory. I couldn't care less about putting photos on my ps3 and I need that 140mb for yet more music that 99.8% of ps3 games don't allow me to play in the background.
you dont have to download the photo tool it just alots you the option to do so. and stop whining about being able to play music during games. i you want an system that can do that and is unreliable go get a 360.. but this is a ps3. and half the time people don't even use that feature
fav quote of the year
Reliability? Bah. Just because everyone you talk to says they're on their 63rd 360 doesn't mean anything! Hey, just as a final question; something to chew on here: that 8-10 million gap in user base...how many of those sold 360s are second, third, and fourth purchases from the same consumer because their previous console crapped out? I know warranties and the like will take care of some of them, but they can't possibly take care of all of them.
@ MaDDkiLLa
Im with you because Ive felt the burn of the 360.
I bought my second one after my first rrod'd and it failed too. Sold it as damaged on ebay and bought a ps3. No troubles and free online gaming. boo microsoft.
Old news. The update is already out. I downloaded it from my PS3 at around 2:00pm India time today (Around 7.5 hours ago). But for some reason the US playstation site is not showing the new update (still showing 2.53). By the way the Photo Gallery is a cool feature. Apart from that I haven't noticed any major changes.
