Prices of five quad-core and one dual-core processor have been slashed by Intel, effective from January 18, 2009
Intel has reduced prices on select quad-core and dual-core processors to push the demand for faster chips. Prices of about five quad-core and one dual-core LGA775 socket based 45nm technology built processors have been slashed by Intel, effective from January 18, 2009.
The price of the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 has been slashed to $316 (approx. Rs. 15,300) per thousand units from $530 (approx. Rs. 25,700) per thousand units. With 40% reduction in price, the top end quad-core model Q9650 is clocked at 3.0GHZ with a 12MB L2 cache and a 1333MHz FSB. Other quad-core models whose prices were reduced were Q9550 (by 20%), Q9400 (by 20%), Q8300 (by 18%), and Q8200 (by 16%), as reported by Xbit Labs.
Intel's quad-core Q9400 and Q8300 directly compete with AMD's freshly announced new Phenom II X4 940 and 920 processors under the new Dragon platform. The most affordable 45nm process built quad-core Q8200 is priced at $316 (approx. Rs. 8000).
Intel has also reduced the price of the 45nm process built 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 by 15%, bringing the price down to $113 (approx. Rs. 5500) from $133 (approx. Rs. 6500) per thousand units. The prices of Pentium dual-cores E2220 (by 14%), E5200 (by 24%), and E5300 (by 14%) as well as the Celeron dual-core E1400 (by 19%) have been reduced.
The price cut at this point of time was unexpected and many might construe it as a direct aftermath of the launch of AMD's Dragon Platform.
