The 2.5-inch Pipeline HD Mini and 3.5-inch Pipeline HD.2 are built for DVRs and media centre computers
Seagate has introduced two new Pipeline HD hard disks for Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) - Pipeline HD.2 and Pipeline HD Mini. Seagate claims that the Pipeline HD Mini is the world's first 2.5-inch hard drive for DVRs and is available in 160GB and 250GB capacities. The Pipeline HD.2 has a 3.5-inch form factor and is available in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB capacities. This new Pipeline HD series will be available in the second half of 2009 in India.
DTH services are getting popular in India after the introduction of Tata Sky Plus. Ideal for DVRs, media centre PCs, IPTVs, and home theatre PCs, the Pipeline HD family now has DVR-specific hard drives.
These new 1TB Pipeline HD series hard drives allow the capture of up to 200 hours of HD television content and 1000 hours of standard definition content, and up to 10 simultaneous streams of HD video is supported. Seagate claims of achieving improved acoustics, energy efficiency, and high reliability with Pipeline HD drives.
By the end of the year, it would be interesting if DTH manufacturers roll out their products with such high capacity hard drives. Users would obviously be tempted to replace existing HDDs in DVRs with the 1TB HDD. Price will be a significant factor affecting sales since cost of production and cost of ownership might be high initially.
