As high definition content is fast gaining popularity, we review this new HD camcorder from Canon.

Compact, Stylish, Excellent build, Ergonomic, Swivel LCD, 60 GB hard drive + SD HC, Crisp image quality, Smooth and silent optical zoom, Good battery life, Remote control, Optical image stabilization.

Awkwardly placed USB port, Not very light, No carry pouch, No optical viewfinder.

The Camcorder

The Canon HG20 is a splendidly crafted piece of art (if we may say that) and though it is larger than its Flash-based counterparts, the size is quite manageable. Just like its Flash-based brethren, it's stylish and sexy looks are guaranteed to steal your heart. It exudes a metallic luster, though the body is largely made of plastic, which seems to be of very good quality. There are a number of flaps on the camcorder (more on that later) and they seem to be durable as well. Overall, the camcorder has a solid feel.

Weighing 465 grams, the HG20 is not very light and holding it in your hands, in a recording position for more than 20 minutes at a stretch will cause fatigue. The attached grip belt makes it comfortable and easier to hold the cam and also makes it feel more secure. Left-handed people are left in the lurch as this is aimed solely at the right-handed. To carry it around while not shooting, you can attach the provided wrist strap.

Just near each of the wrist strap attachments, you can see two flaps. The one at the front cover the Composite port, AV port/Headphone socket and a microphone jack, while the rear flap covers a mini HDMI port.

The mini HDMI port is not compatible with normal HDMI cables we easily get. Hence, you will have to hunt for an adapter or purchase one from Canon in order to view HD videos on your HDTV. The picture above shows how different the mini HDMI port on the camcorder is from a standard HDMI port.

While holding the cam, your thumb can be used to change the mode with the help of the conveniently placed large thumbwheel at the back. You can choose between still and movie capture, still review and movie playback. There is a button at the center of this thumbwheel that lets you start and stop the movie recording.

Jayesh you do not seem to be reading the specifications at all the HG-20/21 both support 30p mode which is not available in any of the models within the Sony stable. As for the high amountof artifacting in 24Mbps you need a stable pair of hands, the aut-stabalisation will not correct all mistakes that you do. Also both these models are lighter then their Sony counterparts. So please get your facts correct before writing an utterly useless review.
