Olympus Launches Tough Digital Cameras

What would you call cameras that are shock-proof, water-proof, freeze-proof, crush-proof and shake-proof? No matter what you call them, Olympus is calling its line of such cameras 'Tough'. The company has unveiled two cameras for the series -- Stylus Tough-8000 and Stylus Tough-6000.
Till last year, Olympus used to market its 'Stylus Tough' series under the 'Stylus SW' branding.
The Stylus Tough-8000 is the high-end camera among the two launched in the series. It features a 12 megapixel sensor, resistance power up to 6.6-foot drop, can survive up to 33 feet when underwater, almost 220 pounds of pressure, and it can also withstand freezing cold weather (up to -10 degrees Celsius).
It features a 2.7-inch display, a 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom (28-102mm equivalent in 35mm photography, f3.5-5.0). It supports xD-Picture Card media and microSD memory cards.
Furthermore, the cameras come equipped with Red-Eye Fix, in-camera editing function, an LED Illuminator for a mini-flashlight, Olympus' enhanced TruePic III Image Processor for crystal-clear photos, and a direct link to upload images and videos to YouTube.
It comes integrated with manometer that shows the depth of where the images were captured. Users can also take videos underwater through the included underwater movie mode.
The Stylus Tough-6000 is a 10-megapixel digital camera and is less of a hulk compared to its counterpart. Tough-6000 can survive up to a 5 feet drop, can dive up to 10 feet below the surface and can withstand freezing cold environment of up to -10 degrees Celsius.
It comes with a built-in four preset underwater scene modes to vibrant picture capturing.
Both the cameras feature lightweight, stainless steel and aluminum exteriors with interior rubber gaskets and O-rings, and a water-repellant lens coating.
The camera features an 'OR' button that makes it easy to activate Olympus' unique features that include In-Camera Panorama, Shadow Adjustment and Perfect Shot Preview.
The Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 has been priced at $399.99 (approx. Rs. 19,565) and will be available in February. The Stylus Tough-6000 camera is expected to be available in January for a suggested price of $299.99.
