Set to debut at least one smartphone at the upcoming 3GSM, Mobile World Congress event scheduled at Barcelona mid-February
The dust is settling on the CES, but the excitement on the mobile phones front seems to be on the rise.
If it was the Palm Pre announcement that made hearts skip at the CES, we have news coming in that PC-maker Dell is all set to debut its range of smartphones - or at least one smartphone at the upcoming 3GSM, Mobile World Congress event scheduled at Barcelona in mid-February.
While it might be illogical for some to see Dell jump onto the mobile phone bandwagon, any such attempt by the world's second largest PC-maker will be seen with great interest. As to why Dell would want its footprint in this highly competitive segment, the reasons are clear.
The smartphone is one of the fastest growing consumer electronic segments and its share in the total sales of mobile phones is on a steady rise. In 2008 alone, 14 percent of mobile phones sold were smartphones. That amounts to a total of 258 million smartphones sold just last year. The number is set to rise tremendously this year as well and Dell, it seems, does not want to be left behind.
Another reason for all the buzz with the Dell smartphone seems to be the hiring of Motorola's Ron Garriques, the man behind the Razr series back in 2007. With 2009 already in, the time period to work on a new handset from scratch seems to have been approached and that happens to be the cause of excitement.
While Dell's reputation as one of the largest PC-makers would definitely bolster its chances at its first attempt at the smartphone segment, reputation alone would do no good in the current competitive scenario. To be able to establish a firm base, Dell handsets would obviously need to be either extremely good or groundbreaking - like the iPhone.
As of now, news is that the phone would be based on either the Android or Symbian Series 60. No specs or further details are available now.
