Dell releases the new XPS 625 desktop for gamers, which is based on AMD's recently launched Dragon platform
Dell has unveiled new XPS 625 gaming desktops with AMD's freshly introduced Dragon platform. The exciting part is that XPS 625 has the option of overclocking the unlocked Phenom or Phenom II 'Black Edition' CPUs. Gamers can thus muscle up the Phenom II chip with ATI Radeon HD 4800 series graphics for more performance. The price range for the customizable XPS 625 starts from $999 (Rs. 48,600 approx.).
Dell's gaming desktop packs in the recently released AMD Dragon platform that includes Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition processor, ATI Radeon HD 4670 or HD 4850 graphics, and the AMD 790 series chipset. Apart from these high-end AMD-specific products, the system RAM can be boosted up to 8GB DDR2 800MHz in dual channel mode. The graphics are also available in CrossFireX configurations.
It is to be noted that Dell lists Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition at $375 (Rs. 18,225 approx.), since it's unlocked for overclocking, otherwise Phenom II X4 940 is listed at $275 (Rs. 13,400 approx.). Also, gamers won't be able to put the faster DDR3 memory to good use since Phenom II chips support Socket AM2+ based motherboards equipped for only DDR2. Later, when AMD announces the Socket AM3 chips, Dell may offer the DDR3 memory option.
Storage won't be an issue in the desktop because XPS 625 allows for the increase of storage space with the option of 3TB (1.5TBx2) 7200 RPM SATA 2 HDDs with 3.0GB/s, 16MB cache. Sporting the 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium, Dell also offers a Blu-ray optical drive.
The system hardware can be rigged into a full tower with customizable AlienFX lighting schemes developed by Alienware. Dell XPS 625 desktop is available by order.
