New version of Keynote, Pages and Numbers takes the suite online with file hosting and group editing functions, and is priced at $79 (Rs. 3,850)
Apple announced new version of iWork business productivity suite that takes the suite online with file hosting and group editing functions.
The iWork 09 features updated versions of Keynote, Pages and Numbers with new collaborative service iWork.com. Positioned against Microsoft SharePoint and Google Docs, iWork '09 is priced at $79 (Rs. 3,850) and family pack costs $99 (Rs. 4,800) for up to five licenses.
The iWork business productivity suite features online storage, editing, notation and conversion services. Two modes of access are offered: Online interface as iWork.com and integration with actual iWork programs. Tech evangelists are already comparing features like online storage and group editing function with Google's Docs and Spreadsheets. In the first place, Google Docs and Spreadsheets don't require either of the programs installed in a system. But iWork's online version does require iWork 09 installed on Mac.
Keynote's new version features Magic Move effect that applies 'morph'-like transition between slides. Now transitions get assigned to starting and ending objects or text. New slide transition effects and themes, along with new chart shapes, textures and animations, are added to Keynote.
To complement this new suite, Apple announced Keynote app at $1 from App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch.
New Pages upgrade gets long-awaited full-screen viewing option and mail merge with Numbers. Dynamic outlining feature is added to help in planning out and organizing long projects. MathType and EndNote integrations are offered for scientists and academics, along with 40 new templates.
Numbers 09 adds new feature to re-categorize a table by any column. With over 250 functions in function view added, formula writing is expected to be easier now. New charting options like mixed chart types, charts with trendlines, error bars and mutli-axis charts are added to beef up charting process. The charts in Numbers 09 can be easily linked to Pages 09 and Keynote 09.
Subscription charges to iWork.com are yet to be announced. A 30-day trial of iWork '09 is available at Apple's website.
