Nokia Announces N97 Widget Contest

Nokia had discreetly announced, on New Year's eve, a contest to design a widget for its upcoming N97 smartphone.
Aimed at developers, the aim is to develop a winning widget which will go into mainstream production. The developer of the winning widget will in return get a production N97 just ahead of its public release. Oh! and he will also find his very own application doing duty on the final public version.
Nokia seems to be concentrating on Widgets more of late because they seem to be rising in popularity on the S60 platform, which was erstwhile known for the large number of third-party applications based on Java and C++. Widgets, however, are a completely different ball game. Mainly based on XML, these are usually lightweight applications specially designed to save time and, many a times, act as a shortcut or a single interaction point with an installed application.
