    Nokia E63

Prasad Naik, Jan 06, 2009 1844 hrs IST

Nokia E63 is a perfect business phone with a full QWERTY keypad at an affordable price.

Solid build quality, QWERTY keypad, Wi-Fi, 3.5mm headphone jack, Great battery life, Decent sound quality.

Display could have been bigger and brighter, No dedicated volume control keys, Poor camera.

Thickness comparison between the E63 and E71

On the left side of the phone is the microUSB port and the microSDHC card slot (supports up to 8GB) protected by plastic flaps. The right side is completely bare.

The top of the phone houses the loudspeaker and the 3.5mm headphone jack and is protected by a rubber plug, which however is not attached to the phone and hence easy to lose. The move to 3.5mm from 2.5mm headphone jack is a welcome change and people who might be interested in listening to music on their E63 will definitely be pleased.

On the rear side of the phone we can see the lens of the 2 megapixel camera along with an LED flash and a self portrait mirror.

The build quality of the E-Series phones has always been the best among all Nokia phones. In fact Nokia ensures that the E-Series phones are well built as they are meant for businessmen who are likely to abuse their phones (like throwing their phones at a wall) when things don't go right! Well, at least that's Nokia's theory.

Whatever it might be, the build quality of the E63 is fantastic. It feels as sturdy as a rock. There are no creaks, groans and other sounds from the phone which shouldn't be there. The removal of the battery cover is one of the best I have seen, where in you just flick a switch and the cover opens up, negating any need to wrestle with the cover as is often necessary with other phones.

I bought this phone on Feb 2010.By the time I am writing review of this phone,in a nutshell I can say that I am more than highly satisfied.I had to spend INR 9350 to buy this phone.I have also got a Bluetooth headset free. It is a perfect business phone.Looks is good.Performance of qwerty keypad is just awesome.Sound quality is nice.It would be great if the display would be little bigger(comparing to the blackberry).I am not saying that the size of screen is small. It quite better the cheap qwerty keyboard phones which are available now.Display clarity is very clear and you cant face any problem even under very bright sunlight. The thing which made me a fan of Nokia E63, is the browsing experience.I have used GPRS(airtel) as well as WIFI.Both offers just unmatched feelings while surfing net.Surfing sites using this phone is a quite good experience. You can browse websites(NOT ONLY social networking sites) and surf net in a very smooth way.And if you get a mobile version of a website, surfing that site will give you immense pleasure.I use to spend times on my long journey to office by checking emails, surfing sites and chatting. Except this you can download lots of free and paid application from Nokia OVI store.Nokia Map,Quick office(Latest version of quick office supports editing of MSoffice 07 docs like word, excel),zip, adobe reader those are pre installed. Those features make this phone smart than many other smart phones. The only flaw of this device is poor camera. It lacks auto focus and also creates noise in absence of sunlight. In short,E63 is the best choice as business phone if you believe in value for money and cant spend more than 10k.

Hi, its been a week with E63. My first qwerty smart phone. My comments on this phone Design(Overall Layout)- (8/10) Similar to E71. Design is really good slim, handy & good finishing. No fingerprints problem. Build material is full Plastic & is of good quality. Display - (8/10) 16M colors awesome clarity just like other nokia phones. Fonts(adjustable) are also good. Screen is visible in bright sunlight. You should be happy with themes only as the wallpapers will not fit to full screen size\ which is bit annoying. Keypad - (9/10) No complaints. Evenly spread out keys comfortable for both left hand & right hand users. Good feel when the keys are pressed. Navigation key stands out for me. 5 times better than N70. Browsing through web page is damn easy. So keyapad is ++ for me. Camera-(6/10) 2MP camera priety ordinary. Images are ok when taken in day but really fades out in night mode & flash becomes almost useless. A self image mirror & flash as torch is + point. Overall camera is total let down. Music & Earphones - (7/10) Music player is Really good & spaeker phone is ok. Audio quality is ok through earphones but earphones quality seems to be preity ordinary (not good finishing). i was suppose to give 6/10 but 3.5mm jack has earned an extra point. This is reallt + point. Music becomes heaven when you use good quality headphones. GPRS & WI-FI - (8/10) Connectivity is good. Browsing through pages is damn easy. WI-FI is the real talk when comes to smart phones. So WI-FI is really cool on E63. I used WI-FI for almost 3hrs at a distance of 25mts from modem, no problems faced. Modem was in ground floor & i was in 1st floor. Battery - (9/10) Whent it comes to nokia's battery there is no competion. WI-Fi used for almost 4hrs , 1hr of music , 200 text messages sent , 100 text received, 30 mins call. used flash as torch for couple of min. Lasted for 40Hrs. Processor - (7/10) Not the fastest. Bit slow when changing themes & moving through text messages. Other than this processor is fair enough to support all thr features the mobile has. Call quality -(8/10) Is good. Voice can be heard clearly. Other + Points Real Player , Flash player pre installed , DOC , PDF reader, Zip option pre installed, currency converter. Minus points- No stop watch. No rockr keys for volume control. Overall - (7.5/10) The only let down was camera & Ear phones. Processor could have been better. According to me affordable good looking smart phone. In My opinion go for it.

BB-8520 would cost you around 16k and E63 costs you roughly 11k ( 10900 Rs). Both these phones belong to "Business Phone" category, implying that you`d be on GPRS on both (and NOT 3g, since none is 3g). E63 is a better option for the 'real business users', coz the e63 has Class 32, 100 kbps GPRS, and when lined up against BB 8520`s mere Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots), 32 - 48 kbps, E63 is way faster online than BB-8520. I have tested both of them. Moreover e63 has Class 32, 296 kbps EDGE, and BB-8520 is way behind with Class 10, 236.8 kbps EDGE. The only things BB outshines, outnumbers and outclass e63 are the looks, the Brand and better sound quality. IMHO I wouldn`t pay 5k for all these UP-Market functions.

Hi I purchased the E63 today for 12300/- in Mumbai. It does not come with a leather cover, you need to buy it separately. There is a general Nokia E series leather Cover that comes at around 100 bucks.

The battery ability mentioned in this review is perfect. I got mine from Reliance at 14.9k. I had a RAZR2's micro USB, so no problems with data cable. Got about 2.5 days of battery with general bit of music, lot of texting and about 1.5hours of talking. Yeah the features are good, but the intuitive way in which these features have been exposed is awesome.

Mr.Naik, is this a review or a joke? Not a single detail has been reviewed, looks more like a description. E71 battery itself lasts 3-4 days with normal usage (1hr/day call, 30mts/day GPRS, 30mts/day GPS)................and that being the case, the E63 with less features should only last longer. So please dont pass a generic statement that the battery lasts 2 days. We dont need your assumptions.

can the author or anybody please tell me if the lack of hsdpa might be a problem in the future, as far as i can see this is the only thing missing apart from looks n gps when compared to e71, i would not like to shell out around 4.5 k more for just the looks and gps, but my cause of concern is hsdpa, should i worry about it?

With no offense to Mr. Nair, The review is good but not higher on thechnical as well as practical part. From your part Mr. nair you have done adequate job but atleast you should have a look on gsmarena. com and see the review of nokia e63. Regards
