The new Broadband HDTVs will dispense with the need for a video game console, DVD player, or set-top box
Giving us a glimpse of its future plans, LG Electronics is set to launch a new line of high-definition LCD and plasma televisions with direct internet linking at the Consumer Electronics Show this week.
To be called Broadband HDTVs (high-definition televisions), the new TVs will dispense with the need for a video game console, DVD player, or set-top box with internet access. First to be rolled out will be TV sets that will screen films and television shows from Netflix, directly from the Web.
The Korean electronics giant had entered into a partnership with the US DVD rental company last year to launch set-top boxes and Blu-ray DVD players equipped with the Netflix software.
As per Tim Alessi, LG Electronics USA's director of product development, the Netflix-enabled LG TVs will be available this spring at a small premium as compared to models without internet access.
Terming the launch as "an early glimpse of the long-term future", Netflix's chief executive Reed Hastings says it will take years for broadband-capable TVs to filter into most American homes. Buying a video game console or Blu-ray disc player with Internet capabilities may still be a better solution for many people, he feels.
The CES this week is likely to see more excitement from TV heavyweights like Samsung and Panasonic.
