Here is some good news for those keeping tabs on the Indian space program. According to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), the design of the Chandrayaan II has been completed. It will be launched in 2012.

ISRO chairperson G. Madhavan Nair told reporters on Wednesday, The designs for Chandrayaan II have been completed and we hope to launch it by 2012. He added that a small rover will land on the lunar surface and collect and analyze samples in this mission.

The ISRO has not limited itself to the Chandrayaan project alone and the fact that it recently built a commercial satellite for the European satellite operator, Eutelsat (which was launched successfully from French Guiana in South America) bears testament to this.

Nair elaborated that the ISRO was earning about Rs.10 billion annually from its commercial wing and this is expected to grow at a brisk 20 percent each year.

This will be a one-way mission, so no lunar samples returning to Earth

Thank you so very much for the report on come details regarding Chandrayaan 2. The original Soviet and U.S. landers (Luna and Surveyor, respectively) used direct to landing trajectories. These did not require injection into lunar orbit. Will this be a sample return mission?
