MicroSD Card Prices Set To Skyrocket

DigiTimes reported that Samsung Electronics will reduce microSD card production; prices increased by 50% in a day

Samsung Electronics has reduced the production of microSD cards, which resulted in prices skyrocketing by 50%, as reported by Digitimes.  On the other hand, Hynix Semicondutor, Toshiba Corp., and SanDisk had recently decided to reduce the manufacture of NAND flash memory products, which shook the flash memory market.

The flash memory manufacturers reduced production when the production cost became higher than the retail price at which the memory product was sold. All NAND flash memory manufacturers face cut-throat competition to gain maximum market share. Strategies are being devised to rapidly introduce new products and to reduce manufacturing when cost per unit exceeds the retail price per unit.

This might lead to an increase in microSD card prices in India as well since several mobile phones and portable media players support the microSD format. One can buy a 2GB microSD card for Rs. 500, approximately. Now, the price of microSD cards might shoot up and might not come down until February or until after the Indian budget proposals for 2009-10 are announced.
