The current downturn in the WiMax market is expected to change course only from year 2010, driven by mobile WiMax, according to research firm Infonetics.

Though the global economic recession has impacted worldwide sales of both fixed and mobile WiMAX equipment, the former had reached saturation point prior to that, the firm noted. Mobile WiMax spending now accounts for almost three-quarters of worldwide WiMax equipment sales.

The decline is expected to continue through 2009 as the present cash crunch is likely to see less spectrum being auctioned, resulting in fewer WiMax deployment, Infonetics said.

The firm predicts revenue growth in overall WiMax market in 2010, with growing number of WiMax networks being rolled out based on 802.16e specification.
