Athlon X2 7550 targeted at the general public, while the Athlon X2 7750 Black Edition directed at the OEM market
Advanced Micro Devices has unveiled Phenom-based Athlon X2 7000 processors Athlon X2 7550 and Athlon X2 7750 Black Edition. Originally intended for release in Q1 of 2009, these processors came out a bit ahead of time. Built over 65nm process Kuma microarchitecture, the 7550 and 7750 BE will run at processor clock speeds of 2.5GHz and 2.7GHz respectively. The 7750 BE will be available to the general public, while the 7550 will directly hit the OEM market.
These new processors feature 1MB (512kb per core) of L2 cache, 2MB L3 cache, and a dual-channel DDR2 memory controller. With a TDP rating of 95W, these new processors are expected to be compatible with AM2+ socket-based motherboards.
Recently, Turkish users got their hands on the Athlon X2 7750 BE and tested it at their labs.
There are reports that AMD is sailing in troubled waters. Digitimes has reported that AMD might lay off ten per cent of their global work force of around 15,000 employees in January 2009. Market sources state that AMD will lay off staff mainly from manufacturing units and some from administrative positions as well.
AMD has noted weaker demand for processors across all geographical areas and across businesses in the consumer market, following which the company expects the fourth quarter sales to be approximately 25 per cent less than the third quarter earnings of $1.585 billion.
