Apple products have a life cycle of 6-12 months before being upgraded; Mac Mini not refreshed since August 2007
It is rumoured that Apple may announce the new Mac Mini at the MacWorld 2009 next month as per an Apple employee.
Apple may update their low-end desktop Mac Mini and launch a fresh version at the MacWorld Expo 2009, which starts from 5th January. An Apple corporate employee who wishes to stay anonymous told Wired that an upgrade to the Mac Mini will be launched at MacWorld 2009, but couldn't share more details about the product.
Since the last couple of years, Apple has been consistently launching new products at the MacWorld Expo - iPhone and MacBook Air. Apple products have a life cycle of about 6-12 months, after which they are usually upgraded; the Mac Mini hasn't been refreshed since August 2007. However, don't expect Apple's next announcement to be something as pompous as the keynote address of Steve Jobs.
Based on trends in Apple upgrades, Wired has noted some enhancements that can be expected in the next Mac Mini.
- Unibody aluminum enclosure to make it lighter and more sturdy.
- Internal components will be PVC-free with low power requirements, and it will be branded the "greenest Mac ever."
- Mac Mini will have a 2GB RAM (expandable to 4GB), unlike the current 1GB (expandable to 2GB), and it will ship with a minimum 160GB HDD.
- Processor options: 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 2.3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo as compared to the current 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo and 2GHz Core 2 Duo options.
- Mac Mini will have a mini DisplayPort like the one found in new MacBooks for copy protection.
- No Blu-ray player will be shipped for it's a 'bag of hurt' as per Steve Jobs. The Mac Mini will have a CD-DVD slot loader.
- The 2GHz C2D Mac Mini version will sport an Intel GMA X3100 graphics card, a component in white MacBooks, while the 2.3GHz C2D Mac Mini version might ship with a Nvidia video card, since Nvidia had approached Apple with a plan for desktop graphics before unibody MacBooks were announced.
Rumors about the new Mac Tablet have been swarming the web already. We won't be surprised if we hear that Apple is planning to prep the nettop. In fact, Apple's new Mac Mini might actually be branded a new high-end nettop. Let's wait until January 5 for the truth to come out.
