Major operators reluctant to forge a deal with Google on fast lane for content because of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) guidelines

Going against the principle of network neutrality , Google has approached key internet carriers with a proposal to create a fast lane for its own content, reports WSJ .

If successful, Google users will be able to access the company's services faster than those who haven't paid up, defying the content providers' stance that all users have a right to equal network access.

Cable and phone companies operating data pipelines are supposed to treat all traffic the same, but Google's new proposal (openedge) would force their servers to be placed directly within the service provider's network. This setup would accelerate the speed of Google's service for its users.

However, major cable operators have been reluctant to forge a deal because of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) guidelines on network neutrality, according to the same source.

I share your support for Google; however net neutrality is vital and if Google is in fact working against it, that's a pretty scary thought.

I believe this is misinformation. Net neutrality is about not giving certain web entities better bandwidth because they pay money. What google is doing is paying to have their pages cached, which is not against net neutrality. Everyone still gets the same bandwidth. No defiance at all really. Probably a non-story.

Net Neutrality means QOS not dependent on Source or Destination. Nothing else. Location of servers is irrelevant.

I just read all the comments. All you retards shouting about net neutrality need to go read the article and then go read all the articles that quickly followed, saying Goole is NOT abondoning net neutrality. Sheesh.

Are you insane? All the people referenced in WSJ's article have refuted the things reported. SGoing so far as to sa WSJ twisted their opinions and using their statements out of context. Google also released a statement refuting these claims. Catch up tech tree!

I have no idea why you guys are calling for a boycott of google. What google is offering is a service to ISPs. This deal can really only help us as consumers.

Its to bad that there isn't network neutrality as high speed internet providers throttle connections. They shouldn't be able to claim one thing and do another.

I like google services. But network neutrality must stand firm!

Sounds like you guys have absolutely no idea what the hell you are writing about... The deal is not different in any significant way to what other content distribution networks like Akamai do all the time to improve network performance. You really should research the topic before you post.

Listen up, Google. Network neutrality is the only thing keeping us online n the first place. As soon as the sites that I like to visit start creeping along at a slow pace because speed is only givin to the websites who can afford to pay for speed, I'll spend my time doing something other than surfing the web.

This isn't about returning search results faster. It's about speeding up ad delivery by keeping ad images (and, in future, videos) nearer the destination.
