Nokia has partnered with Reuters Market Light (RML) to provide content services for Life Tools
Nokia is all set to offer its Indian non-urban customers services to enhance agricultural output through its Nokia Life Tools next generation agricultural information and educational services.
The service is SMS-based and does not require GPRS connectivity.
The Finnish company has partnered with Reuters Market Light (RML) to provide content services for Life Tools.
Through Life Tools, Nokia intends to offer accurate and regular information on the weather, the prices and availability of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, and the prevailing market prices for produce.
The company further explains that the information is customized to the farmer's location and his selection of crops, and will be delivered directly to his Nokia mobile phone. By getting the latest information directly on their mobile phones, farmers can overcome the uncertain conditions prevalent in the agricultural sector and decide on when to sell their crops, at what rate he/she should sell, where to get the best seeds, etc.
Nokia had announced in November that it would commence the Life Tools services in the first half of 2009 with the Nokia 2323 classic and the Nokia 2330 classic as the lead devices in India.
However, according to some news reports, D. Shiva Kumar, the managing director for mobile phones, Nokia India, has made a statement that the services will be out by the end of December 2008.
He has also stated that these services will be subscription-based and will cost a user Rs. 60 or Rs. 30 per month according to the subscription opted for.
On the education front, Life Tools will offer students language lessons, quizzes on English words and phrases, and general knowledge-based information.
The Finnish communications solutions provider had announced in 2007 that it was going to focus on rural markets in the country.
