Designed for the masses, the low-cost device leverages 3G chipsets
With the aim of providing wireless internet connectivity to the masses, Qualcomm has announced Kayak, a low-cost PC alternative for developing markets like India, China and South America.
"We will introduce Kayak Internet access platform in the second half of next year and this device leverages 3G chipsets as well. The main USP is it can compute in low power scenario like India. It will cost about Rs. 10,000," Qualcomm Senior Vice-President and India head Kanwalinder Singh said.
By the time of the launch, other service providers will offer 3G services too and Qualcomm sees it as an opportunity because of the blistering telecom growth. However, it is still not clear if the 3G services with Kayak will be offered at a discount.
Kayak is a small device which houses a processor, graphics chip, I/O ports and rabbit-like antennae for seamless internet connectivity.
It is based on Qualcomm's own MSM 7000 Series chipsets, which are mostly used in smartphones, famously used in HTC's G1 Android phone. The device will integrate Brew software platform, Opera browser to function all the web apps and ARM applications support as it has an ARM application processor.
This is just a start for Qualcomm and, if all goes well, they may upgrade the current Kayak to a Snapdragon processor for more powerful processing.
