Microsoft enables iPhone users to access huge photo libraries over wi-fi or 3G
We know you did not quite expect this, but you heard it right! Microsoft Live Labs has released its first ever application for the Apple iPhone.
Seadragon, as the app is named, happens to be an online image viewer with a difference. It will enable iPhone users to access huge photo libraries over wi-fi or 3G. Accessible photos include the ones available through Microsoft's Photosynth service (which we had reported about, back in August) and other user-generated content. The software comes with almost 50 sample images - some as huge as 10 gigapixels in size! The repertoire includes satellite images, space and art based high-resolution imagery.
One notable thing about Seadragon is the fact that it happens to be free! This, coming from the same company that "forces" users to upgrade handsets even for minor functionality updates, is strange indeed. Let us hope Microsoft extends its policy of offering applications free for competing platforms -- to its own Windows Mobile platform and begin offering "core" software updates without the user having to change handsets.
