We compare -- Omnia, XPERIA, iPhone -- the best 3G phones available in India.
We finally have 3G services in India. We have also listed several of the best phones across various price brackets that can help you enjoy 3G services. What we now need to see is, how good these phones. I've picked out a few phones that flaunt 3G connectivity.
The phones that I've selected are the ones that are the most competent when it comes to 3G support in India. The phones mentioned below are all capable of 7.2Mbps with the exception of the iPhone 3G.
Samsung Omnia
First, lets have a look at the Omnia from Samsung. Samsung has really been driving the Omnia up the walls with all the advertisement and marketing in its favour. The phone has what it takes to be one of the better 3G phones one can purchase. It's capable of high speeds and has quite a band to play with the incoming data traffic, not clogging any of it and maintaining a free flow.
Next, the phone needs to be capable of handling such intense flow of data onto its memory. The Omnia in this sense has one of the fastest processors waiting to crunch anything that comes its way. It has a 624MHz processor with a 128MB of RAM. In order to enhance your 3G experience, the Omnia has a large 3.2-inch screen with a 240x400 pixel resolution.
There is even a version of the Omnia that supports higher resolution, but it's not confirmed if that'll make it to India shores. Coming to the audio side of the scene, Omnia being the flagship model of Samsung, it is provided with a DNSe chip to make music sound like it's meant to be. However, the interface can't be left out, as you need to interact with such services. The Omnia is a Windows Mobile device one of the most compatible and has user friendly interfaces with all the options that one would need. It also has the latest that is there to offer from the Windows Mobile platform -- Windows Mobile 6.1. The Samsung Omnia though loaded doesn't provide the users with a good battery life, thus hindering the enjoyable experience for too long.
Samsung Omnia i900 is priced at Rs. 33,500.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA is another Windows Mobile device. This too is capable of speeds up to 7.2Mbps and will be able to handle the starter 3G speeds available in the country smoothly. To manage the data flow, the XPERIA X1 has a slightly slower processor as compared with the Omnia, at 528MHz. It also has a 256MB RAM and is able to crunch the data flow without much hassle. For experiencing the audio visual aspect of 3G services, the XPERIA has a 3-inch screen with an 800x480 pixels resolution. The audio quality of the phone is good too.
Being a Windows Mobile device and armed with a QWERTY keypad, the XPERIA is pretty user friendly and will make quite a choice for 3G business users. The XPERIA X1 also holds a good battery pack. With a specified talk time of 10 hours (2G), it's sure to deliver more experience time as compared to the Samsung Omnia.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 costs a whopping Rs. 44,500.
Apple iPhone 3G
Now, lets look into the Apple iPhone 3G. It's the same as the iPhone, except for the added 3G support. The good part is that this phone made it to India officially. However, the iPhone 3G isn't the best 3G phone around. For starters, it doesn't have a video calling capability. Nonetheless, what the iPhone can provide today is much more than what any other phone can. When you buy an iPhone, it's not just a phone you get, but an entire package. You get iTunes, App Store and that brilliant user experience. It also has a 3.5-inch multi-touch screen and an interface that can't be compared to any phone.
The Apple 3G also houses its own internal memory that is sufficient when it comes to 3G data storage (8/16GB). The word on it managing such high data flow is that it's not too good at it, but still manages to keep things smooth. Last but not the least; the iPhone has quite a good battery life. Built as a multimedia device, it's got as much juice as the XPERIA X1, but it beats XPERIA in terms of real time usage.
iPhone 3G (8/16GB) comes at Rs.30,000/35,000.
Quick Recap
Out of these three 3G supporters, our choice would be Apple's iPhone 3G if video calling is kept aside. This can be attributed to package deal that the phone offers to its users. Thus, users can harness 3G services right at this moment. The other two, though much capable, will have to depend on several other variables such as VAS provided from the operators. Meanwhile, iPhone is just going to be increasing its sales in India.
Seriously speaking, how many of you would use video calling in the first place since chances of the other party having a non-3G phone are way too high.
GPS feature of OMNIA is not seen mentioned in the review. Being a frequest mobile camera user i really appreciate the low light mode capability of Omnia, when compared to other mobiles. 5MP image will help to view the image with minute details.10 hr talk time for iphone and xperia is doubtful. qwerty Keyboard is an added advantage for xperia.
i missed out it's 5-megapixel camera's other features such as editing capability of video recording, face detection, smile detection and auto-panaroma shot etc
3G means Internet, Internet mainly means browser and browser related services. Only iPhone is capable of providing a browsing experience worth using. The windows mobile UI and input methods in both omnia and xperia provide for a very dismal browsing experience and the complicated pages like orkut.com (not the mobile version), the yahoo.com and many others don't open correctly on omnia and xperia. Even if they open their ajax stuff doesn't work correctly. In terms of internet usage, iphone gives the best experience and usability. The only thing advantage omnia has is video conferencing capability, but video conferencing is not possible on standard 3g internet packages, you have to pay extra for video conference facility to provider and each call is very expensive. I've used Omnia and many other windows mobile phones and I've used iPhone, Only iPhone can justify good internet bandwidth.
May be u r right when u say that iphone is better bet, but looking at the quick review Sony Ericsson is also good. But considering price and overall iPhone is better. But apple should seriously think about the camera and video calling.
Apple does not want to allow any low quality stuff (apps, service, data) on it's phone. And right now, the video-conferencing protocols that are in place allow for a really bad quality reception and transmission of video. (qcif h.263 at 64kbps - really horrible). You can barely recognize the other party's face. And video conference calls are really really expensive, ISPs would literally skin you alive for each call. Video calling will take a couple of more years to stabilize as a good feature with rich quality experience. Apple is ready to wait for it.
I agree that the camera can be improved.
But personally I don't use my phone-camera very often even if it is 5MP or whatever.
It is because even if the sensor is 5MP it doesn't make much of a difference, it can never compare to a good Nikon or Canon camera of same Megapixel. I take a lot of photos only when I'm travelling for that I like to carry a good camera with flash and good battery backup, a phone just doesn't cut it.
Very useful analysis and comparison. Personally, I am looking forward for launch of 3G. Now with MTNL already launching it in New Delhi and the spectrum auction on for private players, it is only a matter of days. Initially, I am expecting the cost to be quite high for 3G services but they will come down (definitely) to improve the general acceptance.
I fail to understand why the hype about 3G. MTNL/BSNL have only stared / starting 3G on trial, it's not going to be widely available in India till at least mid 2009 and we don't even know how affordable it would be. Who know's which would be the best phone to buy then especially since Nokia S60V5 touchscreen phones would be out by then.
I am owner of iphone 8Gb provided by Airtel. But I would like to say that the service provided by Airtel is not good at my place ie Jamshedpur and it is getting hanged amny time s although it is being reset many times.
iphone having a 10hr talk time???? gimme a break. ask all the i phone users who must be charging their phone almost every day! Samsung omnia has a much better battery life. I've used both personally. I do agree that iphone may be a better package overall for a casual user.
