Acer has announced its plans to enter the crowded smartphone arena; it will launch its first device early next year. As of now, no detail of the actual product has been revealed. It is, however, expected to be a Windows Mobile based smartphone.

The decision comes months after Acer took over E-ten, a Taiwanese mobile phone company that sold mobile phones under the "GloFiish" brand. Glofiish, which had a couple of Windows Mobile handsets under its belt, will now manufacture handsets for the Acer brand as well.

The launch of the first Acer-branded handset could however be delayed owing to the fact that the takeover is still pending approval from shareholders and regulatory authorities. Additionally, Acer is also in talks with operators to find a suitable carrier to market the new smartphone. The company expects this to take at least six months. E-Ten in the past has only sold unlocked phones directly to the retail market.

The new venture from Acer comes close on the heels of Acer's purchase of PC maker Gateway and the ongoing negotiations to acquire the European brand Packard Bell.
