The Moorsetown platform, the successor to Intel's Atom line-up, based on 45nm process technology now has a successor. UBS Securities has revealed interesting information about Intel's netbook roadmap in their report - 'Intel Atom: Netbook, Opportunity or Threat?' The 45nm process System-on-Chip (SoC) for the Moorsetown platform, Lincroft, will now be succeeded by a 32nm process technology based microprocessor codenamed Medfield.

At the Intel Developer Forum in October, Anand Chandrasheker, senior vice-president and general manager of Intel's Ultra Mobility Group shared insights about the netbook processor line-up. The Medfield processors for netbooks built with 32nm process technology are expected in 2010. However, before Medfield, we'll get to see the 45nm process technology based product, the Pineview processor, in 2009.

As CNet reported, Medfield integrates the processor, the memory controller, I/O output, and multimedia functions onto a single chip. As per reports, Medfield might also have dual-core variation and might include PC-based graphics cores. The multimedia feature of high-definition videos could be included over a period of time.

So, there's a possibility of two Medfield variants - one with the standard graphics and another that can handle high end multimedia graphics. No clarification is available about the GPUs packed on those processors. In Pineview, Intel might use in-house graphics as per the report, while Lincroft will get a graphics core from Imagination Technologies.

Netbooks, defined by OEMs as notebooks having less than 10-inch displays, are cheap and weigh less than three pounds. However, the accurate definition of a netbook might still be hazy in the minds of consumers since there are several variants of the same brand/product even from a single OEM. Different experts have different opinions about the purpose of a netbook and the various configurations available.
