Bluetooth Special Interest Group has announced that they will release the Bluetooth 2.2 specifications in mid 2009. The Bluetooth 2.2 devices will offer faster transfer rates than those achieved by Bluetooth 2.1 devices. The new high-speed Bluetooth devices are expected to work in conjunction with WLAN or USB for better data transfer rates. They'll be known as Bluetooth 10x devices when paired with WiFi and Bluetooth 100x devices when paired with Ultra Wide Broadband.

Since a lot of the handsets available today are WiFi capable, it's possible that Bluetooth 10x supported devices will be brought out first. Bluetooth 2.2 will enable wireless video streaming, wireless printing, and other wireless-related tasks. If the Bluetooth 100x is used in conjunction with the Ultra Wide Broadband radio, data transfers of up to 480 Mbit/s could be achieved.

The sale of portable media players will get a boost if they are able to adopt the Bluetooth 100x. Currently, the new, second generation iPod Touch has a Bluetooth chip inside it, which has not been used thus far. In the future, PMP manufacturers may come up with multimedia players with higher storage capacity to store high quality videos to stream wirelessly through Bluetooth.

Let's hope that the Bluetooth 2.2 offers better security than the current Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, which hackers found easy to crack.

Indian mobile phone and portable media player users would be delighted with the Bluetooth 2.2 specifications for they'll be able to transfer a large number of files quickly. However, currently, no device supporting Bluetooth 2.2 is available in the market, so the exact transfer rates achievable cannot be stated. The devices can be expected sometime in late 2009 or early 2010.
