Asus's Eee Box didn't live up to the hype surrounding its launch. To revive it, Asus has introduced two new models of the Eee Box, B204 and B206, with HD capabilities. Both carry the Eee Cinema media player for high-definition content playback. Fresh introductions, both products will take a while to hit Indian shores since Asus had only launched the Eee Box in October.
We've already tested B202 at our Labs. Both Eee Boxes, B204 and B206, carry the first gen Eee Box features like a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, an Intel chipset, a 1GB DDR2 RAM, Gigabit Ethernet WiFi (802.11n), and Microsoft Windows XP Home. To add value to the existing Eee Box, Asus has added a ATI Radeon HD 3400 series graphics card with 256MB DDR2 video memory, a 160GB SATA II HDD, and a HDMI port for video-out to take high-definition content to LCD displays.
Asus has packed a remote with the HDMI out, ATI Radeon HD 3400 series video card, and Eee Cinema media player, and the HDMI port allows the hooking of bigger displays via HDMI connectors. Asus plans for the Eee Box to be a multimedia entertainment solution for the living room. Also, B204 has a built-in battery that has UPS functionality, which isn't available in B206. Surprisingly, the B206 model lacks Bluetooth, which is present in the B204 version. However, my biggest lament would be that the Eee Box still lacks an optical drive!
Digitimes reports that Asus is also going to experiment with processor replacements to boost sales. Asus will introduce the Eee Boxes with the Intel Celeron 220 processor replacing the Intel Atom N270 processor, and they will be priced at $240 (Rs. 12,000 approx.). The storage capability of the Celeron-based Eee Boxes will be increased from 80GB to 120GB.
Obviously, Asus has ambitious plans to pump nettops into the market. If prices are affordable, these nettops may become popular in Indian markets as well. With the HDMI out and the ATI Radeon HD3400 series graphics card, Asus might think that the Eee Box is a win-win combo, but the bundle needs an optical drive!
