The combat is unchanged; the Lancer rifle is still the best weapon in the game, couple that with a Sniper or Torque bow and you are good to go. There are a few new weapons that you should get you hands on, including a minigun that one needs when fighting much larger enemies. In Gears of War 2, you will encounter many new enemy types, the large flying reavers, boomers with mini-guns as well as a new super-agile locust who makes Raam (final boss from the first game) look weak. The new enemy may look meaner but they aint smarter, they still make dumb mistakes.
If you take too much damage, you will fall down and have a good 30 seconds of life. A teammate has to simply come next to you and revive you, in simple words you have to be really bad in this game to die too often. The enemy and friendly AI remains the same as last time, no major changes there. The single player is a good 8-10 hours depending on your skill, and these are 10 hours well spent.

Now let's talk about the multiplayer, up to 10 players can play at the same time, which is awesome. There are three new modes, which are essentially reworked modes from the original. A new matchmaking system gets you in games very fast, which is essential for any game. The online is a bit flawed as there is some lag while playing, the good thing is that there are plenty of people to play. There is a new mode called Horde, which is similar to Unreal Tournament's survival, where AI controlled enemy bots, attack you and your objective is to survive. The multiplayer package is quite amazing, and worth every penny you spend.
