Microsoft Not Launching Zune-Themed Phone?

While the rumor mills have been abuzz with the imminent launch of a phone from Microsoft based on the Zune platform, there are others who believe that this story will just remain a rumor.
Michael Gartenberg writing on Mediabistro opines that "the business model of Windows Mobile is totally different from Zune and the Xbox," and for the very same reason we will NOT be seeing a Microsoft phone soon.
To add weight to his opinion, Michael says that Microsoft currently licenses Windows Mobile to hardware vendors around the globe, and it would be suicidal not to use WinMo on the Zune-themed phone that is supposedly on the cards. However, multimedia has never been the forte of Windows Mobile. This leaves Microsoft right in the middle of nowhere with the phone, which is believed to be based on Zune (hence obviously would be multimedia friendly).
It remains to be seen if we actually have an announcement during the CES scheduled to be held in January 2009. Till then, its wait and watch!
