The iPhone 3G might steal the show with 3G network features, but the 2nd Generation iPod Touch is prepped with a faster processor. Handheld Games Corp, developer of games for the mobile platform, reported to Toucharcade that the performance of the 3D game TouchSports Tennis on iPhone 3G was noticeably different from that on iPod Touch. To run consistently, device-specific optimizations have been added to the 3D game.

The new iPod Touch uses a Samsung manufactured ARM11-based processor S5L8720x chip that has been clocked at 532MHz. This processor requires a completely different instruction set, which is why the Jailbreak Dev Team is struggling. The new iPod Touch is noticeably faster than the first generation iPod Touch. The iPhone 3G has a Samsung S5L8900 chip with a PowerVR MBX graphic processor having a clock speed of 412MHz.

As per ARM specifications, the ARM1176JZ(F)-S processor speed in iPod Touch can be increased and it can be clocked at 620MHz. Little wonder that Apple is pushing the iPod Touch as a mobile gaming platform!

Taking Handheld Game Corp's experience into consideration, it can be inferred that the new iPod Touch is the fastest handheld from Apple thus far, closely followed by the iPhone 3G, iPhone, and finally the first generation iPod Touch.

Therefore, those looking to play 3D games that require slightly better 3D rendering can clearly decide which device to buy for the iPhone OS platform.

Check out the video below that shows the TouchSports Tennis running on all four Apple devices.
