Set to breach 10-billion mark by 2013, says Juniper Research
The worldwide gaming market, currently pegged at $5.4 billion, is set to cross the 10-billion mark by 2013. Juniper Research, a research firm, has revealed in its latest study.
The push for this once-stagnant mobile gaming industry will come in the form of new platforms and devices that offer a far more impressive gaming experience than earlier ones. Primary amongst these will undoubtedly be the iPhone, which has revolutionized the mobile gaming scenario. Not only did the platform result in exciting games for the consumer, Apple's revenue-sharing mechanism turned out to be incredibly attractive for games' publishers and developers. The results are there for everyone to see. Even in the weakened economy, this sector has been seeing unprecedented growth.
There has also been a resurgence with the emergence of ad-funded downloads - which act as a supplementary source of income. However, this might not be sustainable in the long run as the cost per mille (CPM) rates are likely to fall in the face of pressures on advertising budgets - thanks to the ongoing financial crisis. The Indian subcontinent, Africa/Middle East and South America are the regions where maximum growth is expected to be seen.
