ARM has already revealed its intention to step into the netbook arena. And now, Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu has also gone on to say that they will be backing ARM and will be providing ARM with their famous Ubuntu linux distro. The Ubuntu linux will be ported specifically for the ARMv7 architecture processors, with the Cortex A8 and A9 offerings in particular.

Canonical COO Jane Silber feels that "this is a natural development for Ubuntu, driven by the demand from manufacturers for an ARM technology-based version." Ubuntu 8.10 has improved netbook support, but Canonical says that they are working hard to increase performance as well as decrease boot load time in the next release.

The ARM netbooks will be officially available from April 2009 with Ubuntu 9.04, aka, Jaunty Jackalope.
