Novatium has tied up with BSNL to offer Nova netPC with broadband. Novatium had launched Nova netPC back in July for Rs. 4300. Under this partnership, Nova netPC will be offered for Rs. 2999 (excluding taxes) with a monthly subscription of Rs. 175. The monthly broadband plans start from Rs. 99. With the patented Desktop Utility Delivery Model technology, both companies aim to inflate the broadband penetration in rural and urban areas.
Object of these partners are fairly visible - offering low cost computing system with broadband connectivity. The thin-client based computer has microchip similar to those used in mobile phones and portable media players. Multimedia enabled netPC claims to offer rich-multimedia experience and is compatible with Windows, Linux and Solaris with support for multiple USB peripherals.
To be noted, Nova netPC doesn't bundle any display or input devices. Consumer have to buy them separately. Check out the specifications of Nova netPC here.
Whether this low cost computer with broadband combo will be able to lure consumers in rural and urban areas, it's pretty uncertain at this moment. Bundled with basic applications like media player and games, it would be beneficial for customers if they get more applications like Office suites - even OpenOffice would do.
It is very old news now. I am not sure about BSNL; however, it is offered through MTNL for more than year.
Also, I feel that "Desktop PC' is wrong term. It is actually a Net PC (like OLPC Laptop). It requires net connection to store data and without net it is not of much use.
