On his trip to Australia for Liberation Day, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO teased media by talking about Windows Mobile 6.5 developments. Without going into further details, his talks hinted about improvements in interface and flow of the operating system software.
As Beta News reported, Ballmer responded to a question about functionality development against RIM and Apple:
"In a way, life's simpler; and in a way, we've seen good work on that approach done from Apple and BlackBerry, and I congratulate them. But I also know that in the last year, our partners sold almost 20 million Windows Mobile devices -- more than either Apple or BlackBerry. It's a little bit more what I would call 'lunch bucket' -- it's not just high-end, very expensive stuff. And with releases we'll make this year, releases we'll make with Windows Mobile 6.5 next year, Windows Mobile 7, I think we've got a pretty interesting roadmap, and certainly one that we're really excited with our engagement with Telstra on."
No specific date was announced for release of Windows 7 which is expected to show up in the third quarter of 2010. Sources closely tied with Microsoft speculated that copy of Windows Mobile 6.5 is getting finishing touches and device partners will be getting copies by next month, as per Neowin.
Windows Mobile will be refreshed version of Windows Mobile 6.1 and can be expected in the mid 2009. Yet another indicator was discovered when Sanjay Jha, Co-CEO Motorola, mentioned about launching Windows Mobile 6.5 based phones in second half of 2009. SO it can be inferred that handset partners like Motorola will receive Windows Mobile 6.5 by end of first quarter of 2009 at least.
Worry question for the existing Windows Mobile users is whether Windows Mobile 6.5 will be upgradable? If not then they ll shift to other mobile platforms.
