Some worthy additions but with strings attached

A while ago, Apple rejected an app called Podcaster which enabled over-the-air downloading of podcasts. The application was unique but was rejected on the basis that "it replicated iTunes functionality". However, the reason given at that time seems half-true in hindsight; the latest screenshot leak of iPhone firmware 2.2 reveals the entire picture.

The screenshots posted at a German blog, shows additional capabilities of iPhone, as unlocked by an upcoming firmware upgrade. The iPhone will now be able to download podcasts over 3G/EDGE or Wi-Fi networks. However, this worthy addition comes with a string attached: for EDGE downloads, the podcasts that can be downloaded will be restricted to below 10MB. Podcasts larger than 10MB will need a Wi-Fi connection. As of now, it is unclear whether this move applies only to the slower EDGE connections or to 3G as well.

Other features expected in the new update are Street View in Google Maps and a revamped interface for the App Store. AT&T has also officially announced iPhone tethering -- through the upgrade it will now be possible to use your iPhone as a 3G modem for other computer devices.
