Ever since Google bought Writely in 2006 and gave us Google Docs, it was thought that Microsoft would respond with a similar product -- a browser-based office suite. After keeping us waiting for nearly two years, we finally have confirmation regarding the same. Microsoft is readying a browser based Office application.

Coming soon are lightweight versions of its popular office applications -- namely Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote to your browser. Moreover, being browser-based does have an advantage of cross-platform compatibility. Macs too will be able to use these apps through Safari. The office applications will use Silverlight if it is installed. If not, they will use Ajax.

Now, this happens to be a very important move from Microsoft. Office has been one of the primary revenue sources for the company and it would be interesting to see how the company positions these new applications. The free versions will be ad-supported and will be delivered through Office Live. There is also talk of a Business version with support for a hosted subscription service.
