Jobs says they don't know 'how to make a $500 computer that's not a piece of junk'
Love them or hate them but you can't resist checking out Apple products. Delighted after the launch of new MacBooks, Steve Jobs made a 'surprise appearance' at Apple's Q4 Earnings Call. (You may listen to the call here.) For the first time in the last seven years, Jobs sounded healthy and showed a positive outlook for Apple even while in the face of the dire world economy.
It was at this call that Peter Oppenheimer, senior vice-president and chief financial officer, announced 6.9 million iPhone sales, 11.1 million iPod sales and 2.6 million Mac sales.
About Apple's current financial situation -- Jobs said that Apple has $25 billion in the bank and will use that capital to drive innovations. Apple however, dismissed the possibility to use that capital to buy back its stock. Steve Jobs heartily responded to suggestion by a financial analyst that Apple now had enough financial clout to hire all the engineers in the Silicon Valley; Jobs jokingly responded that it was a good idea.
The most recurring question put to Apple was, "When is Apple going to introduce a low-cost computer?" Jobs responded to this question and said, "We do not know how to make a $500 computer that's not a piece of junk, and our DNA will not allow us to ship that."
Apple noted that they've already entered the netbook category with iPhone. Jobs said that Apple will wait and watch the nascent netbook category as they have pretty interesting ideas for the same.
Incidentally, a source that prefered to stay anonymous told NY Times that an as-yet unannounced Apple product has been hitting the Internet -- visiting websites and search engines. He further went on to state that this unknown Apple product has a display somewhere between an iPhone and a MacBook.
So is Apple planning a netbook or a tablet? Or is it a future version of an iPhone with a bigger/higer resolution screen?
After the Q4 Earning call, Apple's shares jumped 2.9 percent.
